If I choose to detect network hardware a second time without restarting cardmgr it still fails to find the card. I need to either restart cardmgr or reinsert the card.

I think that this problem is specific to beta4. Could you try a more
recent image such as tc1?

Actually, before I tried beta4 I tried tc1, and with both the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels the laptop locked up hard ealy in the boot process around the point where the message "Setting up filesystem, please wait ..." is printed. After I encountered this, I wasn't able to find mention of tc1 on the debian-installer page so I assumed that it was removed and that beta4 was the latest non-daily one to try. Maybe I should try one of the daily builds.

I added the i82365 module to /etc/modules and rebooted. The module loaded but it still tried to load the yenta_socket module when the PCMCIA services started.

Yes, there seems to be a bug here. I've heard this from somebody else
too I think. It seems like pcmcia-cs's postinst incorrectly sets PCIC
to yenta_socket in /etc/default/pcmcia when you need i82365. Could you
send me the output of the command "pcic_probe -m -k", both with and
without cardmgr running?
With and without cardmgr running, "pcic_probe -m -k" returns nothing at all. Nothing is printed and nothing gets put to syslog or dmesg. When I add the -v option I get:
ident(0) = 0x82 ident(1) = 0x82 ident(2) = 0xff

I then tried loading the orinoco_cs module manually via modprobe and running cardmgr and it configured the card and got an IP address from DHCP. I added orinoco_cs to /etc/modules and rebooted and it was then able to load cardmgr and configure the card. At what point is the orinoco_cs module supposed to be loaded? It is supposed to be loaded by cardmgr when it detects the card?

Only cardmgr can load modules for 16-bit cards. You can't load them
manually.

I can't get the card to work at all unless I have both i82365 and orinoco_cs listed in /etc/modules, or use modprobe to load them.
