Yes it does look like plasmashell isn't starting. When starting from krunner the system tray with task bar appear momentarily and then disappear.
When started from konsole I get errors:

So it looks like plasmashell is not starting because kactivitymanagerd isn't running but if I try to start it I get
:~$ /usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd
Already running
and
:~$ ps aux |grep activity
xxx 30089 0.0 0.2 553044 35104 ? Sl 13:25 0:00 /usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd start-daemon
I also looked at .xsession-errors it is currently over 2 Gb in size :(
I'll need to prune it !!
