Issues with KDE in Debian Testing

Hi,

There have been various (bug) reports about ppl using KDE from Testing having
various issues, which seem to be/are caused by a mixture of KDE Frameworks
package versions between 5.22 and 5.23.

I think I've found a good way to check when it is safe to upgrade in Testing
and that is by checking the plasma-framework package.

On https://packages.qa.debian.org/p/plasma-framework.html you can now
(2015-07-09) see: "The package has not yet entered testing even though the 5-
day delay is over. Check why. "
If you want more details, the "Check why" link points to
https://release.debian.org/migration/testing.pl?package=plasma-framework and
that will detail why it hasn't migrated yet. Keep in mind that it needs to
build properly on all supported architectures for the migration to occur. So
having a successful build on your architecture (amd64) is not enough.
Alternatively you can also check https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?
p=plasma-framework&suite=sid

So if you run Debian Testing (with KDE) and you encounter issues, first do
"reportbug plasma-framework --template"

which will output the list of dependencies (and recommends) including their
versions to your Konsole/terminal window.
It will NOT send a mail as reportbug normally does.
If you there see a mixture of 5.22.x and 5.23.x then that is very likely your
issue and you're kindly advised NOT to (actually) report that to the Debian
BTS anymore.

You can fix that by either downgrading the 5.23.x packages to 5.22.x so they're
all in sync again, or you can selectively upgrade the 5.22.x packages to the
version in sid which has 5.23.

'Maria' has described a proper way to upgrade selectively in
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=830245#25 :

> I added unstable in /etc/apt/sources.list
>
> And created /etc/apt/preferences :
> > Package: *
> > Pin: release a=testing
> > Pin-Priority: 700
> >
> > Package: *
> > Pin: release a=unstable
> > Pin-Priority: 100
>
> Then updated and installed the two files with
> apt-get install libkf5plasma5/unstable plasma-framework/unstable

That will probably fix most issues, but I recommend upgrading all 5.22.x
packages to 5.23.x that you found with the earlier mentioned "reportbug
plasma-framework --template" command.

HTH,
  Diederik
