i'm using it right now on a 512MiB RAM system, with desktop effects
on, iceweasel, konsole, konqueror and dolphin running. Yes, it's not
fast, but absolutely usable:

$ free -m

unfortunately, i haven't any tips for you...
try to disable desktop effects, it may help
