Thanks for your feedback, Anders, but....

The solution is simple: You must use the kdelibs that's available in
Debian Stable.

What? Surely not!?

Surely so.
This solution worked perfectly for me.
See also the message Adeodato Simó wrote on this list 3 days ago, who states you should use the 3.3.2-6.1 kdelibs, not the 3.3.2-7 version which is proposed as an upgrade in the unstable branch.
If you asked me you should use whatever kde packages are available in
unstable
That doesn't work. The package structure in unstable is broken for kde. This was the cause of the problem!

or even better use alioth packages, and use packages from _testing_

I haven't tried this so I cannot comment on it.
to fix dependancy issues. It's probably only libjack, and libaspell that are
causing problems.

I don't know what is the main cause of the problem. Reversing the kdelibs version according to my instructions worked.
To get KDE 3.4.1 add this line to your sources.list

deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.1/ ./

Thanks.
Don't use dselect. Use aptitude!

I'll give that a try. Thanks.
Once you have a working system, just don't upgrade until KDE 3.4.1 is
available in unstable and is working.

Yeah - if you pay attention you won't get into trouble. If you don't, like me, then you have extra work...

Regards,
Steven.
