It's taken some time to get used to, but I love aptitude. But I'm _still_ not
going to use that d$%*ned GUI! :-)
Start with "aptitude upgrade", then it will upgrade most of the " ...useful
packages...", and leave you with a much smaller problem list.
To follow up, if the problem is a managable size, I'll then try upgrading a
specific package to see which one is triggering removal of kde.

I've concluded that apt-get (much as I've loved it for years) is obsolete.
Aptitude from the command line is better - yet command compatible. It's
definitely going to screw things up, though, if you're using both.
