I tried to reproduce your problem and could not.
Please try the following and test the screensavers after each step.
1) remove .kde/*, logout, login
2) remove .menu/*,logout,login
3) create a new user,login as new user
4) use xscreensaver, see alt.os.linux.mandrake, Eric Tompkins,
