Just a follow up to this for anybody who's having issues. I'm not the original
poster, but I was having the same problem -- garbled MP3 playback in KDE
apps. I found the solution in my case, and it could be affecting other debian
KDE users. Apologies if this has already been posted -- I was unsubscribed
for a few weeks while I was out of town:

Because of a compiler bug, mpeglib 3.2.2-1 has an issue decoding MP3s. This
will affect any app using mpeglib to decode MP3s (Juk, Noatun, etc).
Until the new version is posted, you can download a re-compiled version of
mpeglib here:
