This actually helped enormously.  By default, only Type1 fonts are included in 
the fontconfig path.  So, I just added my other font directories into the /
etc/fonts/local.conf field, rand fc-cache and went along with my business.

This should be documented somewhere for all to see, and/or integrated into 
kcontrol.
