Trouble with xmodmap and kde 3.1

It seems that kde 3.1 interferes with my xmodmap changes in a way kde
3.0.5a did not.  Does anyone have knowledge or experience with
remapping keys in kde 3.1?

I use the dvorak keyboard with the Escape key where the Caps Lock key
normally is and the Caps Lock where the right Alt key was.

When I run the following xmodmap commands the Caps Lock key does the
job of the Escape key but also, oddly enough, keeps turning on and off
Caps Lock.

xmodmap -e "remove Lock = Caps_Lock"
xmodmap -e "keysym Caps_Lock = Escape"
xmodmap -e "keycode 113 = Caps_Lock"
xmodmap -e "add Lock = Caps_Lock"
xmodmap -e "remove Mod3 = Caps_Lock"

It seems that the only command that has any effect while kde 3.1 is
running is the second one.  

Anyone have any insight?
