There is one further thing that needs to be considered. Until gcc 3.2 came
along building the Java bits with gcj was not an option. Now we have gcc
3.3 it is a real option, but it will require some work to convert from using
the Sun compiler and run time (which of course are non-free and
non-open-source) to using gcj.
If someone has a working source deb for the Sun compiler and run time I am
happy to give it a go to convert the Java bits to gcj. I talked to Ralf about
this before 3.1 made it into unstable, but then he could not even get the Sun
version from upstream to build properly.
