Instability after kernel upgrade

I have been using the kernel 2.4.19 but need to go to .20 for security
purposes. I've compiled it successfully and installed it with no hitch but
things do not seem as stable in KDE now. When I scroll in a window, I get
little white lines on my desktop window.

They don't seem to appear in other Window managers. Also things are not as
stable. I get crashes about once a week/every two weeks when before I never
had them. I also noticed that in the game TuxRacer, Tux is discolored
(white), leading me to wonder if I'm having a DRI problem.

I've looked through all the /var/log/messages and the XFree86.0.log and can't
find anything that would indicate what's going on.

I'm using Ralf Nolden's XFree 4.3 packages with KDE 3.1.1 and a Radeon 7500.
Is it possible to use the ATI provided drivers even though they are for the
8500+? Or should I downgrade to XFree86 4.2?
