acroread only starts from a terminal

Hi, i've got a problem.
I'm using Adobe Acrobat for viewing pdf's. I need to use Adobe's viewer
because I depend on some features not found in other pdf viewers, like
chapter headings.
If I run "acroread" from an xterm the programm starts normally. If I start it
with kstart ("kstart acroread") it works normally. But if I have it started
from another program (konqueror) it never appears. I do get a startup
notification for acroread (blinking mouse, entry on taskbar), but it never
lanuches. The mini-CLI (ALT-F2) can't start it either.
Any other programm (including alternative pdf viewers) start as expected. Does
anyone have a clue what's going on?
[update]
I found a clue in ~/.xsessionerrors:

Warning: charset "UTF-8" not supported, using "ISO8859-1".
 Aborted

These two lines appear every time acroread fails to start. There is a bit of
delay between the two lines, acroread starts in less then a second, so they
might not be related.

The irony is that Bill Gates claims to be making a stable
