Haven't tried the hardware cursor approach, but GPM definitly isn't the 
problem.  I completely removed the GPM package and the the problem popped
up this time while using Konqueror.  It's definitly application independant,
it's happened while using Netscape, Gimp, and one time coming back from the 
screensaver the mouse was scrogged.  A couple people suggested trying another
"silken mouse" setting for the video, but I'm not finding much info on that.  
Sounds like it might be more wheel-mouse related.  I just hate it when stable 
upgrades break things!    :)
