Yet another AA question

I can't seem to get AA working. I am using Karolinas KDE3.1 RC5. I have 
installed the msttcorefonts package. I also ran dpkg-reconfigure 
x-ttcidfont-conf.
The font bitstream charter looks antialiased as the only font.
