devfsd and kde

I am struggling a bit with devfsd and could do with some help

What I have done is create a kernel in which devfs is built, and my sound
card (soundblaster live -emu10k1) is built as a module.

When kde starts up it complains that it can't find /dev/dsp at the point
where it normally plays the little "I have started up" music sequence (prior
to that, when the sound card was compiled into the kernel and the /dev
directory was hardcoded - I got sound out without any problem)

So what do I do now? I think I want access to /dev/dsp to create a request
to load the sound card driver - and from reading the man pages I assume that
I need a line like

LOOKUP ^dsp$ MODLOAD

somewhere. However I did this, and it didn't seem to solve anything

Question 1 what do I do?
Question 2 should not the standard debian distribution be doing whatever is
needed for me
