Fonts in logon dialog box

On my Sony Vaio PCG-C1VE with a strange display size (1024x480), the fonts
all looked horrible (scaled) until I "restated" them. For example, I
changed "Helvetica 11" to "Helvetica 11" and it now looks fine. I imagine
this is due to the font path being searched in some strange order ?!

Anyway, the problem now is to do the same thing for the logon dialog box.
For example, the words "Password:", "Session Type:", and "Restart X Server"
all have lumps in the letters. I imagine this is controlled by a magic file
somewhere - or do I need to change my X FontPath ordering ? Currently the
order is "misc - 100dpi:unscaled - Type1 - Speedo - 100dpi".
