You mean, that you always repack the upstream tarball, and add +ds?

I think that is overkill - I see a benefit to pristine tarballs (still:
git is awesome but Debian is still at its core tarball-based).

What I do for all source packages is include gbp.conf that strips
*from my local unpacking of the git source* (but without messing with
tarball repackaging) all .git* files.
