The Debian Education distribution

Title: The Debian Education distribution

[ To the press team: feel free to reformat the announce, and please send
  it to debian-news or debian-announce ]

                The Debian Education distribution

Back in 1998, the French Board of Education committed itself to
promoting the use of Free Software, especially in high schools, where it
was less widely used than in universities. The CNDP[1], through the Mission
for Technological and Industrial Survey, has since been watching over
the development of free educational software, and informing teachers
about the open source ethics. Thus a dedicated workgroup has been set
up in order to make an inventory of software currently used in high
schools, and to document it in French. The result of this survey can be
found here :

In 2001, the Conseil Général de Seine-et-Marne[2] decided to provide high
schools with 2,000 Linux-operated computers, in order to test the
efficiency and useability of both the OS and the registered
applications. To make it possible, Logidée[3], a company specialized in
providing professional training and consulting on Linux, has kindly
packaged all the applications for the Debian distribution, customized
the installer and the desktop to make it possible for teachers to use
it. The resulting bootable ISO image can be downloaded here :

In accordance with the specifications of the Conseil General, the system
will install on a single disk, either empty or with a single vfat
partition. Please do not forget to backup all data before starting to
install. The workgroup will keep expanding the list of available
software and encouraging teachers who developed educational
software to put it under a free license.
