Different people have different tolerances for "bearable". Not only
that, but CPUs of different families don't compare well by MHz alone.

Even though the configuration I mention in my proposed revised text
(a 486dx/66 w 32M) might be considered adequate by some to run Gnome
or KDE, I think most people (especially those who have ever used
anything faster) would find it intolerable. An intrepid low-end
hardware user who pushes their hardware to the limits and really
wants to run Gnome or KDE in spite of the limitations is going to
ignore my recommendation and try it anyway just to see if it is really
that bad. My note is not for them. The note is intended to give some
guidance to someone who might think they can just pluck any old piece
of old hardware out of the closet, slap Debian Jr. + Gnome/KDE on it,
and make it work for their kids. It gives such people a little dose
of perspective, rather than hard-and-fast rules as to which systems
work and which don't. I can throw the word "probably" in there if it
makes you feel better. :)
