Debian Linux System Administrator and Open Source Developer



Hello,

I'm part of the Kali developer team and we're expanding the team. See the
job offer below. This is a really unique position where part of your job
is to contribute back to Debian and to free software in general, and to
maintain the infrastructure used to build one of the most popular Debian
derivatives.

Job Purpose
-----------
The role is part of the small Kali developer team and is thus
multi-faceted.

On one side, as a system administrator, you will be responsible for the
on-going maintenance of Kali’s existing development infrastructure and
online presence (built on top of Debian or Ubuntu servers), and for the
deployment of any new infrastructure.

On the other side, as an open-source developer, you will help with the
maintenance of Kali Linux, ensuring that the 600+ Kali specific packages
are installable and working, that the installer and cloud images meet the
user expectations, and that regressions are swiftly discovered and fixed.

Duties and Responsibilities
---------------------------
As a system administrator:
* Maintain, secure and administer systems that are part of Kali infrastructure
* Monitor performance, utilization and security of all services ensuring
  efficient operation and data protection
* Design and participates in disaster recovery process
* Participate in the evaluation of new products and services envisioned
  for the Kali infrastructure
* Write and maintain technical documentation related to internal
  infrastructure and monitoring

As an open source developer:
* Maintain and expand our continuous integration and test infrastructure
  * GitLab CI (based on salsa-ci)
  * Autopkgtest.kali.org (based on debci)
  * Jenkins.kali.org
  * Daily/weekly builds of live/installer images (based on live-build and
    simple-cdd)
* Triage incoming bug reports
  * reproducing the issue ;
  * diagnosing the origin of the problem ;
  * possibly forwarding the report to the right party (when Kali is not responsible).
* Fix regressions reported by users or discovered by the CI and test infrastructure:
  * often in cooperation with upstream open-source developers ;
  * update the Kali or Debian packages to include the fixes.
* Write and maintain technical documentation related to Kali and processes
* Answers community concerns about Kali
* Other duties as needed.

Core Qualifications
-------------------
* Five or more years of progressive expertise in operating and
  administering Debian/Linux/Unix operating systems
* Prior experience with Debian packaging
* Prior experience of contribution to open-source projects
* Knowledge of multiple programming languages
* Ability to read code even in languages that you are not familiar with
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to execute flawlessly in stressful situations
* Experience in backup operations in a production environment
* Familiarity with Debian & Kali Linux
* Well-versed in the use of a wide range of open source tools
* Track record leveraging scripting (Shell scripts/Python) to build
  required automation and tools on an ad-hoc basis
* Experience with cloud and virtualization based technologies
* Ability to learn on the job and explore new technologies
* Self-motivated, proactive, independent and responsive; requires little
  supervisory attention
* Must be a team Player

Desirable Qualifications
------------------------
* Three or more years of use with Ansible and SaltStack
* Debian Developer
* Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP)

Working Conditions
------------------

Full time - 40 hour work week.

Timing of the hours for this position are flexible, and will be performed
remotely from a home office.

This requires accessibility to Offensive Security system and interfaces,
and adherence to all security protocols and policies.
