UNIX/Linux system administration team in San Francisco at Looksmart. The

Systems Administrator 3 (Solaris/Linux)
Job Summary:
This posting is for an advanced systems administrator. The ideal
candidate will have significant experience in the implementation of
scalable networks of heterogeneous systems and in working as a member of
a large team. S/he will have demonstrated ability in automating systems
administration tasks and authoring policies and procedures that support
24x7 operation. This position includes off hours, on-call
responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the reliable, correct operation of production services with
24x7 uptime
- Implement scalable, multi-architecture network based services
- Write automation tools for the maintenance of said systems
- Work with development groups as a partner to meet company goals,
identify solutions to problems and proactively seek improvements in
reliability and performance of LookSmart products
Required Skills:
- 5 or more years of experience as a systems administrator in a large,
heterogeneous environment, including at least 2 years experience each
as a systems administrator in Solaris and Linux environments
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of writing
purchase justifications, training users in complex topics, making
presentations to an internal audience, and interacting positively with
upper management
- Independent problem-solving, self-direction
- Comfortable with most aspects of operating system administration; for
example, configuration of mail systems, system installation and
configuration, printer systems, fundamentals of security, installing
third-party software
- Solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system, including paging
and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device
drivers do, and filesystem concepts (inode, clustering, logical
partitions)
- Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing
environment concepts; can configure NFS, NIS, NT domains; can use
nslookup or dig to check information in DNS; understands basic routing
concepts
- Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (e.g., Perl,
shell)
- Ability to do debugging and modification of C programs
- Ability to setup and manage common network services (Apache, BIND,
NIS, Sendmail)
- Familiarity with CVS or other version control systems (rcs, Perforce,
SourceForge)
- BSCS or equivalent experience
Desired Skills:
- Experience with hardware and software RAID solutions, 3rd party file
systems and volume managers (e.g. Veritas), experience designing
distributed file system architectures (NFS, AFS, DFS, etc)
- Familiarity with MS Windows systems administration concepts
- Participation in Open Source development projects
