We offer our users a 4 year old copy of JabRef that builds from source, transitively, all the way down, and so they have little choice but to go install the "insecure" bundle from upstream. I like the idea of focusing on a toolchain to make it easier to build these packages. We should be able to offer them via contrib [1].
