I would like to join the openjdk packaging team to contribute to the
openjdk package. I have a lot to learn about this package and that's
also why I'm a student for this GSoC.

Did you plan to work directly on OpenJDK8 or will you try to package the
"jigsaw" forest of opendjk7 [1] ?

afaik, the OpenJDK8 development is currently done behind closed doors, so which other chance do you have besides working with 7?

As of packaging all this on Debian/Ubuntu, we currently have two main JDK
repositories [2] [3]. You should have a look to some "guidelines" I've written
for new comers to this package (like me :) [4]

Joining this team will also allow me to get more familiar with the
Debian processes and the openjdk package.

I really would like to see this work being done within the IcedTea project, not (just) within the packaging. Are there any issues preventing this?

  Matthias
