I did not write anything about /usr/share/tomcat6 but about the $HOME of
the tomcat6 user. :)

Yes, it is probably better to change $HOME into /var/lib/something and
symlink /usr/share/tomcat6/* into ~tomcat6/ . The upgrade has to be tested.
