~ Building Eclipse 3.0 properly is going to take a considerable bit of
work. However, the SWT libraries are packaged separately from Eclipse,
so that may not be an issue for you. Search aptitude with the phrase
"^libswt" and you will see quite a few SWT libraries in both GTK and
Motif versions.
~ The Eclipse packaging project was abandoned by Jan Schultz in mid to
late 2004 and picked up by Joerg Wendland and a group of us under his
leadership. We haven't made much progress yet, but now that the
holidays are over, it should start picking up.
~ You may be misguided about what is involved in getting a Debian Java
package into main; I recommend reviewing the following links below if
you have not already.
