Good idea, but I wonder what actually is the bug?
Or, to paraphrase the original poster, what is/might be missing?

PS: Maybe somebody would try to debug it with Eclipse?  We've just
released a Debug-enabled snapshot that contains the JVMDI and JDWP
interfaces and thus allows for comfortable debugging with Eclipse.
This should be fun, I think :-)
