It indeed is not that hard... I've made three Debs sofar (on
mentors.debian.net: cdk, jmol, jcpcdk), and it is reasonably easy...

I'm quite busy with my PhD at the moment, but would be very glad to help

Anyone from the debian-java team who is interesting in making 'Swing'
available to Debian Sid?

About SwingWT:

"To use in your applications, add the swingwt.jar lib to your classpath and do
a search and replace. You want to replace all occurrences of javax.swing with
swingwtx.swing, and java.awt with swingwt.awt. That's it!"

"Developers deploying to *nix/Win32 can compile natively with GCJ and the
applications can be distributed without a VM. Linux distribution makers could
package many existing Java/Swing applications that previously could not be
distributed in workable state."

It's dual licensed with GPL and another license:

http://swingwt.sourceforge.net/

The website shows screenshots made on a Debian system, so it runs on Debian...
