1. Sometimes strace can tell you, in cases when the syscall is involved.
Or in the case of libcall, you can try with ltrace (debian package name:
ltrace).

2. Library path? Library problem? Probably. I've once helped to solve
similar problem by simply changing LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

3. Try to change thread model. java is actually a script, look inside to
find how to do this.

4. Or... I have just installed blackdown's 1.3.1 and it works... I have
3.0 and it's updated from the net. Got mine jdk from

ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/java/JDK-1.3.1/i386/FCS-02b/j2sdk-1.3.1-02b-FCS-linux-i386.bin

Single 'java' command was ok. To be sure, I've started xnap with it and it
too was ok. So if you have to use 1.3.x maybe you should try fcs-02b
release.
