Blackdown has debian packages which are much easier to install, unless
of course you want to roll your own packages. But then it depends what
you want to use java for.

Java Runtime Environment - you'll need that to run java programs.
There are free JREs available as well, like Kaffe or GIJ

I just use emacs for editor... :)
