Gira e rigira il problema sta nella testa dei progettisti Canon (l'unico
produttore "importante" a non usare usb-storage) e, nel tuo piccolo,
probabilmente in un banale problema di permessi sul device relativo
(azzarderei un /dev/ttyUSBx di qualche tipo). Ho letto che come root le
foto te le scarica?
