Siccome il pc che utilizzo non e' un fulmine di guerra (Celeron con 64MB) ho preferito installare XFCE4, molto meno famelico.

A spanne direi che la tastiera è configurata correttamente per X. Che 
desktop enviroment utilizzi? Gnome o KDE? Per kde, prova a vedere come è 
impostata la tastira (dal pannello di controllo). Può darsi che ti 
rimappi il tutto diversamente.
