Assicurati che la sezione del kernel dacaricare contenga una linea tipo 
questa, ed ovviamente che ci sia initrd nella /boot, in /etc/lilo.conf:

image=/vmlinuz
        label=LinuxNEW
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.5-686
        root=/dev/hda2
        read-only

man lilo.conf per tutte le opzioni possibili.
