It's not software, it's definitely not Linux(!) - it's firmware. (Unless you're talking Sun's new OpenStorage stuff, in which case it could be OpenSolaris.) This is stuff that is all managed at the storage *controller* level, not the host or its operating system. Imagine a SCSI controller with a *large* brain and network connectivity (to other storage devices).

SAN storage controllers can do block level replication between storage units with no interaction from the computers connected to them. You can also take snapshots of a volume and export them to a host(s).
