I am not asking for this, I know this is not easy to accomplish. Or
at least not unless you dig iproute.

What I want is that it takes *either* of the routes consistently
("the first"), instead of just not working.

Actually it does work, and it does exactly what you suggest in doing a 50/50 load balancing between the routes - I think you will find however that you have 2 different source addresses, and the box on the other side will not know who you are.
