ECC RAM

Dear List,
I have been running servers for years with ECC RAM, but only realised
today that linux doesn't seem to spit out any messages when something
goes wrong.
I have noticed that in the BIOS for our SuperMicro servers we can set
the ECC notifications to NMI, SMI or SMC. As of 2.6.16, EDAC is
included and seems to provide support for checking ECC RAM.
What should I set the bios to - leave it set as SMI, or should I
change this to NMI?
If I set it to NMI, does the kernel provide error messages without
using the EDAC driver?
Questions questions questions...
Thanks
Andrew
