as far as I remember this is what "passive FTP" is about: client connects to server for the data connection, so I think it's correct.

Martin, I basically agree that it's their firewall which is wrong or it's that the FTP server is multi-homed and the firewall is not aware of this (but otherwise configured well). Ok, after thinking about it I guess it's simply a wrong configured firewall (stateful inspection?). Perhaps you ask the ISP kindly to check his logfiles.
