Problem with server

I recently had a server load spike, and had to do a "hard boot" of the 
server.

Now, when I start up the server, I get "umount: /initrd: not loaded"  
Even when I boot from the emergency boot disk.


If I let the machine sit, it just hangs, until I press Ctrl C, and then 
it goes to an fsck. and things go worse.


Whats causing this?
