I am happily running Nagios, but I have to admit that there is a
steep learning curve for the first configuration.

If you can (vaguely) read french, I wrote a little presentation for a
sysadmin meeting :

The aim is to avoid the Nagios newbie (as I was) to spend time in
the first setup. I should translate it in English one day.
