Postfix Authentication for Remote Users

I have installed postfix for the first time, but can not figure out
how to tell it to authenticate remote users, ie users on (generally
dynamic) machines outside the network who should be required to
authenticate prior to sending mail. I'm simply getting a rejection.
Example from log follows:

Oct 7 22:39:42 toad postfix/smtpd[11732]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT
from adsl-68-89-124-36.dsl.rcsntx.swbell.net[68.89.124.36]: 554
<recipientusername@recipientdomain.net>: Relay access denied;
from=<myusername@mydomain.com>
to=<recipientusername@recipientdomain.net> proto=ESMTP
helo=<[10.111.111.145]>

Any ideas? I know how to do it under exim, but was told I had to
build this one with postfix.

Thanks,

Rod
