mgetty and AutoPPP

Gday,

Im having a hard time getting mgetty and AutoPPP connections to work
with /etc/ppp/{pap,chap}-secrets.

o My error message im receiving from the dialin server is below

rcvd [PAP AuthNak id=0x1 "User not known to the underlying
authentication module"]
Remote message: User not known to the underlying authentication module
PAP authentication failed
sent [LCP TermReq id=0x2 "Failed to authenticate ourselves to peer"]
rcvd [LCP TermReq id=0x2 "Authentication failed"]

o /etc/mgetty/login.config looks like

/AutoPPP/ -     -       /usr/sbin/pppd auth login +pap debug kdebug 7

Ive also tried with no luck

/AutoPPP/ -     a_ppp       /usr/sbin/pppd auth login +pap debug kdebug 7

o /etc/ppp/options.dialin which is called by /etc/ppp/options.ttyS0
(incoming modem) looks like

debug
kdebug 7
proxyarp
modem
crtscts
mru 552
mtu 552
show-password

o /etc/pam.d/ppp looks like

auth    required        pam_nologin.so
@include common-auth
@include common-account
@include common-session

o Important package versions are below

ii  mgetty          1.1.33-2
ii  ppp             2.4.3-20050321+2
ii  libpam-modules             0.76-22

Users within /etc/passwd are able to login via a ppp session, but
/etc/ppp/{pap,chap}-secrets users are not.

This dialin server used to allow incoming ppp connections when it ran
woody, and a recent upgrade to sarge has broken this.

Any suggestions or possible fixes are greatly appreciated.
