Two MX records should be enough to do that, no need for more complicated
setups using heardbeats and so on.

The idea is redundancy, not load-sharing. But they will load-share if you
add two MX records.

And remember, these are strictly MTAs, they never deliver anything locally,
there is no MDA involved at all.  It is E?SMTP-in, ESMTP-out.

The MDAs can continue in master.d.o or any other Debian machine.
