Isn't there a management console port (9pin Sub-D) at the front of the 
boxes?

If there is, ...
connect your serial port with the management port and start a local tty 
session. In some cases, (e.g. if you see wired characters on your 
screen) you need a special console cable. I can't remember the wiring 
diagram, but maybe 3com does...
