the directory and to migrate from /etc/passwd. Browse
freshmeat, it will show several hits.

It works, thanks to libnss-ldap.
We, too, had to code up some utilities to replace useradd,
passwd, etc. because we found no suitable solutions.
In fact, we've concluded that LDAP a pain to administer.
But it has its own benefits.
