kernel and serial console don' work fine

hi all,

i have a problem. after some updates in the 3.1 series (i think) i'm 
unable to view via console login the kernel messages at boot and at 
system down.

I'll explain myself. When i boot the box, i can see this lines:

    LILO 22.6 boot:
    Loading LNX2681....................................
    BIOS data check successful

When i shutdown the only messages i can see are this:

    soho:~#  reboot
    Broadcast message from root (ttyS1) (Sat Oct  9 16:26:36 2004):
    The system is going down for reboot NOW!

I think the problem is a cofiguration and package update problem because 
it worked in the past and left to work.

The packages that i use in order to achive this console connection are 
getty, minicom and lilo.

As i only use console logins for my servers this is a big problem and i 
ask for the community help because i see myself in a no way street.
