I did some migrations like this (mbox2maildir with courier).


- Maildir performance depends on the _number_ of messages 
- Mbox performance depends ont the _size_ of the mailbox

- Maildir is better for concurrent mailbox access or mail storage on
  "bad locks handling fs" like nfs.

All those preceding items makes me prefers maildir and particularly
postfix+maildrop+courier-imap than other free softwares.
