Don't know if that's better, but it's more work in any case. CNAMEing would just work. Main problem with CNAME is that a lot of DNS lookups are necessary - but with ntp, it's just one lookup when ntpd starts (contrary to MX pointing to CNAME which are evaluated basically for every single mail).
