I think its a good idea to keep a cvs repository of  /etc

Eg:

#!/bin/sh
cd /etc
cvs -d /root/securecvs -q import -m "nightly=$(date +%Y%m%d)" etc nv nightly
> /root/cvs.nightly.log 2>&1

.. which I run nightly.
