OT: APT hangup

Greetings everyone,

A little bit offtopic: i'm running an old potato (2.2.19pre17) server and
wish to do some upgrades: kernel upgrade to 2.4, ext2 -> ext3. Apt seems
to do some extreme errors: it freezes (sometimes while unpacking
packages, sometimes during configuration) or segfaults. Although after a
few runs of {apt-get upgrade, dpkg --configure -a} i've managed to upgrade
my installed packages to newest potato versions.

Everything else is working correctly, the server provides web night and
day without any kind of error. Has anyone met this problem while
upgrading old versions or its some kind of hardware specific problem?
