squid [access.log]

i want to write a little tool for my school with apache/squid in perl.
the squid writes it's access to /var/log/squid/access.log and this perl-scipt
should go and collect these informations.
the /etc/cron.daily/squid - script rotates the logs so if they get too full
this stores it to a new file.
i would like to write the perlscript to update, i mean to read the logs,
about every 5 min and then write it to a file but what if the log gets
rotated?
1. i loose some data
2. maybe my script which may be started with "tail -f access.log" may hung
does any1 have a good idea to solve this?
tnx for everything ;-))))
